How to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive

Hi, guys hope you all are well. In this tutorial, we will install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive. This tutorial is for those who have not yet started using the new Ubuntu(Linux) operating system. Ubuntu is one of the most popular operating system. It is an open-source easy to use and highly configurable operating system.

The installation process is more difficult than the normal software installation. Many people didn’t know how the installation process is work. For this reason, we are going to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive. In this case, we are going to make a clean Ubuntu installation.

Quick Hints: We are going to make a clean installation. This operation will erase everything from your Hard Disk drive. My honest opinion and my friendly advice please take a backup from your Hard Disk Drive.

System Requirments for Ubuntu Desktop

You must have minimum this configuration PC for installing Ubuntu.

  • 2 GHz dual-core processor
  • 4 GiB RAM (system memory)
  • 25 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
  • VGA capable of 1024×768 screen resolution
  • Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media

Steps to Install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive

As before I say OS installation prosses is much more difficult than general software installation prosses. For this reason, we break it in some different steps. Like Downloading, create a live bootable Ubuntu USB stick, BIOS  setup and finally install Ubuntu 20 on our system. So get started to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive.

Step-1: Download ubuntu

We have to Download Ubuntu ISO(.isofile) from their official site. Download: Ubuntu desktop from Here.

Step-2: Create a Bootable Ubuntu live USB stick

For installing Ubunto in our system, we must have a bootable live USB stick or a bootable live disk. In this case, we are going to make a bootable live Ubuntu USB stick. For doing this job we need a tool called, Rufus. Rufus is the most popular tool for creating a USB flash. Download: Rufus from here. Now double click on Rufus.exe file and open it. Insert a USB stick at least 4GB.

After opening Rufus it will be like this. From the Device, section select your USB stick. Now click the select button (marked in image) and choose the downloaded Ubuntu ISO (.iso) file.

Set all options as shown as the image and click the start button. To start creating a bootable USB stick.

When you click the start button you can see this popup window. From their click ok button and confirm this operation and give some time to complete it.

After completing this progress, your bootable ubuntu stick is ready. Now close this Rufus application and we are ready to go in the next step of install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive.

Step-2: Setup BIOS for installing ubuntu

In this step, we will set up the EFI boot option from BIOS. For doing this job we have to access the system BIOS.  At first Restart or power on your System, When your system is beginning Power on press and hold the F2, F10, or DEL button then you will Access your system BIOS.

Quick hint: Google your system Model For accessing BIOS.

After accessing the BIOS go to the Boot menu and change Boot order according to the USB stick. Then save this and exit from Bios. Your Bios setup is completed. Now your system will boot from Ubuntu live USB stick.

Step-4: Install Ubuntu 20 on your System

It is the final step to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive. When your system boot from the USB stick you will see the Ubuntu grub from there select Install Ubuntu you can select this option also Try ubuntu without install.

For select, those options use the arrow key and hit Enter for confirmation. If you select Try Ubuntu without install then you can use Ubuntu Direct from Your USB in this case you can face some problem.

From the grub option if you select Install Ubuntu then you will see this window or otherwise you can see the installation Icon on your desktop. Select your language and then click on the Install Ubuntu button. it is the first step to install Ubuntu from a USB flash drive and we did it.

This is the second step to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive. Select your Keyboard layout from this Window and Continue.

Check those options What you see in the image and then click on the continue button.

Quick Hints: We are going to make a clean installation. This operation will erase everything from your Hard Disk drive. My honest opinion and my friendly advice please take a backup from your Hard Disk Drive.

Select your Comfortable installation type and click the Install Now button.

In this case, I am doing a clean installation process. If you have Windows installed then you will see the option Install Ubuntu alongside Windows select Tis option and Give Ubuntu at least 20 GB space.

After configuring the storage option you will see this small panel. Read the notice and click on the Continue button.

From this panel select your Location for Timezone. Click the Continue button.

Provide your Login information this information will needed wen you going to access root level user. After providing your information click the Continue button. It is the most important step to install Ubuntu from a USB Flash drive, remember the information that you provide in this step.

Do not do anything when installation process is running.

Now we are Successfully installing Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive. If you want to check your new Ubuntu OS then close this window and continue otherwise clock on the Restart Now button.
